How much should a Long Island business spend on Google Ads a month?

Short answer

For most Long Island service businesses the lowest budget that gives Google Ads a fair test is $600 to $1,500 a month, or about $20 to $50 a day. Lawyers and other high-cost trades need the top of that range or more. A good rule: budget for about 10 leads a month at your trade's average cost per lead, then split it across only as many towns as that money can cover.

Key takeaways

  • Budget for about 10 leads a month. Below that, one bad week can fool you.
  • Nationally, a typical lead costs about $67, $73 for dentists, $91 for home services and $132 for lawyers.
  • Divide the monthly number by 30.4 to get the daily budget Google asks for.
  • Every extra town splits the same money. Start with one or two towns and add more when the leads come.
  • Your ad budget goes to Google. Our management fee is separate and starts at $299 a month.

The question we hear most about Google Ads is not "does it work?" It's "how much do I have to spend before it does?" Honestly, there's no single number. A salon and a personal injury lawyer buy the same kind of click at very different prices. Here's how we work out a starting budget, by trade and by town, and where we'd tell you to wait.

What is the minimum Google Ads budget?

Ask what you need Google to prove, not what's the smallest amount you can spend. A test is fair when it produces enough leads to tell a good week from a lucky one. We use about 10 leads a month as the floor. Fewer than that and a single wrong click pattern can swing the whole month.

So the formula is simple: typical cost per lead for your trade, times 10. Then check it against what your town costs.

What should each type of business spend?

The table uses the 2026 search benchmarks published by LocaliQ, the home of WordStream. Those are national medians for search ads on Google and Microsoft. We multiplied each cost per lead by 10 and rounded. Treat the result as a floor for a first test, not a promise of 10 leads.

If your trade isn't on the list, start from the all-industry line and ask us for the real cost of your searches. We check the real cost of your searches before you commit to anything.

How does your location change the number?

Two things move it. The first is how crowded your area is. Nassau and Suffolk have plenty of plumbers, dentists and roofers all bidding on the same words, and the price per click goes up with the number of bidders. The second is how many towns you want to cover, and this is the one you control.

Every town you add splits the same budget. A $900 budget spread over six towns is about $5 a day per town, which is too little to learn anything. The same $900 on two towns is a real test. So we'd rather you start narrow and grow.

How a $1,000 monthly budget splits as you add towns
Towns coveredBudget per town a monthBudget per town a dayOur advice
1$1,000$33A solid test for most trades
2$500$16Fine for a single service
3$333$11Only if the towns are small and next to each other
6$167$5Too thin. Cover fewer towns or raise the budget

There's one more local factor. If you work on Long Island but your best customers live in two or three towns, put your money there first. Your own past jobs tell you more than any benchmark. Our SEO cost guide shows the same math for SEO, if you'd rather compare the two.

How do daily and monthly budgets work in Google Ads?

Google asks for a daily budget. Here's what its help page on overdelivery says: on a given day your campaign might spend up to twice your average daily budget, and at the end of the month you will have spent no more than 30.4 times your average daily budget. You are not charged past that monthly limit.

In plain words: set $33 a day and expect about $1,000 a month, with some days higher and some lower. That's why we set a monthly cap on every account, and pause before we reach it.

When should you wait instead of starting small?

Sometimes the honest answer is "not yet." Hold off if:

  • Your budget is under about $500 a month in a costly trade. At $8 a click that's roughly 60 clicks. A couple of bad clicks matter too much.
  • Your website can't turn a visit into a call. Ads send people to your pages. If the phone number is hard to find or the page loads slowly, you pay for visitors who leave. Fix that first.
  • You can't answer the phone. A missed call from an ad is money gone. If nobody picks up between 9 and 6, schedule the ads around the hours you can.

In these cases a smaller step often pays better: fix the site and your Google Business Profile, then add ads. Our Google Ads vs SEO post walks through that choice.

What does the first week look like at a fair budget?

  1. 01

Day 1: pick the budget and the towns

Use the table above. One or two towns, one or two services. Write down the monthly number and the daily one.

  2. 02

Days 2 to 4: build and approve

We write the ads in plain words about your real prices and hours. Nothing runs until you say yes.

  3. 03

Days 5 to 7: go live and read the searches

The first days show the exact words people typed. Some will be wrong for you. We block those early so the money goes to the right ones.

  4. 04

End of week 1: check the phone

Count the calls and forms. Don't judge yet on three leads. Judge on the month.

That's it. The first month is a test. The second month is where it starts to pay, because you've cut the wasted clicks.

What do you pay us on top of the ad budget?

Your ad budget goes straight to Google, and you can see every dollar in your own account. Our fee is separate. Ads Starter is $299 a month for budgets up to $1,500, Ads Growth is $499 for $1,500 to $5,000, and Ads Pro is $799 for $5,000 to $15,000. Above $15,000 we charge 8% of spend. Setup is $0 and there's no contract.

So a dentist starting at $800 a month in ads pays $800 to Google plus $299 to us. Our Google Ads management page has the full plans, and you can pair ads with SEO for less than buying both. See the bundles.

Questions people ask

Is $300 a month enough for Google Ads?

For most Long Island trades, no. At $5 to $10 a click that's 30 to 60 clicks, which isn't enough to tell what works. It can work for a low-cost business in one small town. Otherwise start at $600 or more.

Should I set a daily or a monthly budget?

Google only takes a daily budget. Divide your monthly number by 30.4. Google may spend up to twice that on a busy day, but it keeps the month under 30.4 times the daily figure.

Do you charge a percentage of my ad budget?

Not until you spend more than $15,000 a month. Below that it's a flat monthly fee from $299.

How soon do I see leads?

Ads can bring calls within days of going live, though the first weeks are for learning which searches pay. We read the search terms every week and block the waste.

Is this the same as Google AdSense?

No. AdSense pays website owners to show other people's ads. What a local business buys is Google Ads, where you pay for clicks on your own ads.
